The Yacht Club "Bura" was founded immediately after the World War II, but, as the real beginning of its operation, 1951 is considered, when the first STAR class sailboat was purchased.
In 1952, another two sailboats were purchased - one of them sailboat cruiser of 38 feet - which enabled a larger number of young people to sail.
That was a big achievement because, as elite sports, sailing and motor-boating were at the time available only to people with higher living standards and education. Namely, before the Warld War II, only several Makarska doctors had boats for sport and recreation, exclusively speedboats, which were on lost in the war. It should be noted that there were only 5 smaller fishing boats in Makarska at the time of founding of the Club.
In the sixties, the club already had 17 seaworthy sailboats, wooden boats requiring regular maintenance, but there was no lack of enthusiasm. By, maintaining the club boats, volunteers not only assisted the Club, but acquired the knowledge which will later come handy in maintaining of their own boats.
The Club is currently oriented on the OPTIMIST and LASWR classes. It organises sailing schools for children and prepares them for participation in numerous regattas in Croatia. Besides that, the club has cruiser at its disposal, suitable for training in sailing and daily charter trips and club regattas, but it has bigger cruiser for several-day cruises too. Each year, the Club organises a sailing regatta of cruisers in which foreign boats can take part as well.
The Club has electric crane, so that it provides services of lifting and washing of boats.
